Burma Army Suffered 1,000 Casualties in Kachin Conflict: Report

More than 1,000 Burmese government troops were killed during four months of fighting against Kachin rebels late last year, according to an army report cited by the Shan Herald Agency for News. Brig-Gen Aung Soe, commander of the Northeastern Regional Command, reportedly told other regional commanders in February of this year that the army “lost more than 1,000” during the period of September to December 2012, when the conflict with the Kachin Independence Army was at its most intense. At the same time, he said, the Burmese military was able to successfully capture all targeted KIA outposts through intensive use of heavy weapons and air support.
