Burma’s military strongman, Snr-Gen Than Shwe, indicated in a speech on Friday that he would not yield to demands from domestic and international critics who say that the country’s military-sponsored constitution should be revised ahead of next year’s elections.

“The new State constitution has been approved by the great majority,” Than Shwe said in an address to the Myanmar War Veterans Organization speech in Naypyidaw. “Elections will be systematically held in 2010 … in accord with the constitution.”

The constitution, drafted by delegates handpicked by the junta, was “approved” by more than 90 percent of eligible voters during a referendum in May 2008. The outcome of the referendum was widely dismissed as a sham.

The regime has consistently ignored calls from the international community and Burma’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), to review the constitution.

There are estimated to be 10 political parties in Burma, most of them inactive. The regime has yet to announce an electoral law that will allow new parties to form and register to contest in the election. The international community, led by the UN, has repeatedly demanded that the election be inclusive, free and fair.

In a recent announcement, the NLD set conditions for its participation in the 2010 general election. It requested an amendment of any provisions in the 2008 constitution “not in accord with democratic principles” and an all-inclusive free and fair poll under international supervision.

Rights groups have also said that the regime must release all political prisoners, including NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi, if it wants the elections to be regarded as legitimate. About 2,100 political prisoners are languishing in prisons across the country.

In his speech, Than Shwe said that some powerful countries are using many ways to pressure and influence Burma under various pretexts.

“However, the Tatmadaw [armed forces] government does not get frightened whenever intimidated and will continue to work relentlessly for a better future of the State and the people by overcoming any difficulties,” he said.

They are announcing shamelessly that the constitution was approved by a great majority. They didn't say that it was approved at gun point. Why haven't they announce the electoral law yet. Why don't they let other parties prepare for the upcoming election?

"Elections will be systematically held in 2010 … in accord with the constitution.”

Why didn't he say directly to his audience "in accord with his military constitution"?

Saw Maung (General in 1990, head of Nation) affirmed that 1990 election would be free & fair. Moreover, he promised to transfer POWER to the elected government.

But you all know what happened.

How can we believe these Army Generals?

I am really fed up with the international community in attempting to handle and solve the problems, ignited by the Burmese military regime, in Burma. The sanctions imposed do not affect the Military regime. Unless stronger actions are taken, political reform in Burma will not happen.

The International community is just too good when dealing with the Burmese military regime. They ignore the lives of innocent people. Where is the Univeral Human Rights?

It is not enough for the international community to be enthusiastic about Human Rights. They must implement them as well.

Who is intimidating him Than Shwe?
He gets frightened whenever Daw Suu opens her mouth in private or public. Hence he put her under house arrest and kept her incommunicado.

And he does not dare face her and talk about the country's posterity or people's prosperity.

He took 14 years to hatch his self-serving constitution and got it endorsed right in the middle of deadly Cyclone Nargis, over the bodies of more than 140,000 people and cries of 2.5 million homeless people.

Now he is poised to force his bitter medicine (2010 elections) down the throats of the people.

Than Shwe is still foolishly sticking to his cruel plans to rape Burma. He does not realize that in few years` time, he will be out of active politics. The new generation dictators will come up according to his plan. The new dictator will have his eyes on fortunes collected by Than Shwe`s families during his reign of terror. This is the reason for death of Ne Win and jail sentence of his son-in-law and 3 grand children.

Wow! What a statement! If there was free and fair referendum, people would strike down Than Shwe's one-sided drafted constitution. This constitution is no different than Ne Win's constitution. Therefore, we the people will never accept it as legitimate constitution.

I am very disheartened to read Snr.General Than Shwe's speech to the Veteran Organization, an organization to which he actually doesn't not belong since he is still in active service at 76.

I wonder what all the veterans including the older ones that once belonged to the patriotic Peaople's Army of the old days really think.

What makes things worse i the 500,000 plus soldiers of the Burmese Army do not have the human right of choosing their own candidate.

The poor veterans depend on meagre economic handouts from the Army's Economic Holding Ltd. ( Oo Paing Co.), in which elite generals are the major shareholders taking the lion share of profit out of the country's economic enterprises.

I really pity my old colleaugues seen in media photos, sitting quietly with uneasy faces in the front row of the meeting patronized by the current generals (once their subordinate officers) in active service, telling them what to do.

The Myanmar Veteran Association is a group of ex-military service personnel, but now they look like dumb stooges.
