Col Chit Thu, the commander of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) Battalion 999 is now believed to be the most powerful man in the DKBA administration.

According to Karen sources on the border, he ordered the week-long offensive against the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade 7 that ended on 21 June, and he has ordered his forces to move against KNLA Brigades 6 and 5.

Though other commanders like Gen Kyaw Than, chief of the DKBA, and Thar Htoo Kyaw, chairman of the DKBA’s political wing, are more senior, Chit Thu is more popular because he gets things done, the sources said.

“Chit Thu is an active man,” said a DKBA source. “He is also popular for his community development work in education, health care, and Karen culture, and he is good at lobbying people.”

Chit Thu is now believed to the most powerful decision-maker in both the DKBA’s military wing and its political administration.

DKBA sources report that Col Chit Thu owns large businesses dealing with logging and auto trading, and is involved in drug trafficking. He regularly flies to countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong to facilitate his car importing business, the sources said.

The DKBA remains the only ceasefire group that has signed an agreement with the military regime in June to transform its troops into a border guard force.

Since April, Chit Thu has been overseeing the conscription, possibly forced, of new recruits for the new battalions of the border force. Each battalion must consist of 326 soldiers.

The DKBA has also been assigned the role of cleaning up the KNLA areas and reinforcing troop strength along the Thai-Burmese border.

During the recent attacks against KNLA Brigade 7, the DKBA soldiers were paid to take front line positions, and local Karen villagers were forced to work as porters in the front line with them.

Some DKBA leaders realized that they were wrong to attack fellow Karen in the KNLA and Karen civilians, Karen sources said.

“The DKBA leaders knew that they were being used by the Burmese regime. But there is no possibility for DKBA leaders to rejoin the KNU [Karen National Union] because of their business interests,” said one Karen source on the border.

Many members of the DKBA get nothing while their leaders get richer and richer, however.

“This inequality will just get worse,” the border source commented.

According to a DKBA businessman, the DKBA plans to join the Burmese authorities in managing the border trade after they have destroyed the KNLA bases along the Thai-Burma border.

The DKBA leaders are hoping to increase their business activities and build a road connecting their headquarters at Myaing Gyi Ngu with the Thai border, he said.

DKBA ventures involve logging, mining minerals such as zinc and tin, and building factories and business enterprises.

However, the border trade will be controlled directly by the Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the businessman said.

“Once they have become a border guard force, the DKBA soldiers will be paid by the Burmese regime. So, I doubt they will be able to earn big profits. Most of the money will go to the Burmese regime,” he said.

Among the DKBA leaders, Col Chit Thu is thought to have the best relationship with the Burmese military, and he has been the most effective in following junta orders, said border sources.

Chit Thu was reportedly given large sums of money by the Burmese authorities for the attack on KNLA Brigade 7.

Meanwhile, disagreements are said to be growing among some of the DKBA leaders.

Chit Thu was kicked out of the KNLA for being a rapist and a thief.

Dear Chit Thu,I hope this message will find you well. As a Karen I am proud of you as a great warrior and such a talented fighter. You have fought great battles and have won great fights for your Karen people. You have dedicated youself for our so called REVOLUTION. The revolution of the Karen people to live peacefully in our own land. The revolution of the Karen people to be free from oppression. It is very unfortunate that some understandable reasons forced you to defect to our enemy and the enemy of all the people of Burma. Since then you have been engaging in both good and evil for your own benefits. You have turned against your own Karen brothers and sisters. You have killed your own kin to please our enemy. You know best Chit Thu. Please sit and think very carefully before you bring great destructions to your own people. Please stop. Let me sincerely tell you that one day you will be killed by the enemy you trust after you have killed all your brothers. Don't betray your people.

Karens kill Karens? It is just a shame for the Karens. How stupid these Karens are! Don't they have any brains at all? What do these Karens eat? Fish paste and rice? That's all they eat? That's why they don't know what is right and wrong.

It will be too late when the Karen people realize that Karen killing Karen will only benefit the Burmese military regime. Internal conflict between the Karen people is the result of the mismanagement of the movement to bring peace to the land of Karen by most leaders with top decision-making positions. We should not hold the DKBA alone to be accountable for all those killings. I am not saying they are right in what they are doing. And I am not supporting the DKBA to destroy and murder their people. It is time for the Karen people to put aside our differences, come together, and fight our enemy. It is time for the Karen people to stop killing Karen. Let's join hands again and fight the Burmese regime for all the Karen and others. Stop the killings. Bring peace to the land.

As long as trade and business rules the border and both sides are profiting, there will never be any resolution or peace. The DKBA are a bunch of uneducated greedy bandits doing the bidding of their masters.

The DKBA are not Karens. They are Than Shwe's dogs. They just know how to bark and bite.

On the one hand, it is true that the world community has become more aware of the Karen struggle due to the 88 movement. On the other hand, we, to put it mildly, will need to ask who provided shelter, food, clothing, weapons, etc. to those fleeing the brutal onslaught by the SLORC troops. We will also want to ask who helped form the ABSDF, DAB, NCBUB, and NCUB.
The last thing is that, to the best of my knowledge, the Karen people do want peace like everyone of us, but what they want is durable peace. For that reason, they have all along unwaveringly called for settling the political problem of Burma through political means with fairness and dignity.

The DKBA is making the right decision to make the pack with the Burmese central government. I will tell you why.
Fighting with weapons, the KNU and KNLA never accomplished what they want to have for the Karen state.
I will give you an example:

One person is angry with another person for no reason. He likes to kill him, but he is not going to kill him right now.
He is going to kill him for a longer time by using his brain how to kill him for longer time.
Using the weapons is not the correct way to do the business.
Come on guys, we are living in the 21st Century. Forget what the US did in Iraq and Afghanistan.
You can not do it in Burma for no reasons.
The KNU and KNLA need to change their strategy to look for peace agreements with Burmese government.

Look for future. Please

As I've observed, Chit Thu is very popular in the DKBA. Since he knows that it will be for his own profit he has the nerve to do exactly as he is ordered. He lacks knowledge about politics. So he acts desperately. Most of the DKBA members are illiterate but seeking fame and popularity. It is because they are disregarded in their societies. Because they are poor and not hardworking. Some of them are even thieves. There is no other way to gain public attention other than being a member of the DKBA. They join the DKBA out of hatred and grudge. So they dare torture their own people. Since I found this weakness a few months after the DKBA. was formed, I made a strong comment about what will happen in future. Now what I foresaw comes true. The military regime is happy. For their strategy has been fulfilled. There is no more hope that the DKBA will join with the KNU, again because of their business interest. It is true that the inequality is getting worse.

Interesting—the dynamic has changed.
First, it was the battle between Bamar and Kayin. (Side track: Armed Kayins should be grateful to the 88 students. If it was not for them, the world would not have paid as much attention to the Kayin struggle for decades.) Now it's about the battle between Buddhists and Christians. What about the Muslims living in the disputed area? When will their turn come and in what type of dynamic will they be put in?
I still believe that the The Irrawaddy online news is getting better, in terms of including non-bias articles/news. The danger however awaits if the team do not restructure their policy, particularly on sourcing out reliable news. After all, the ION (Irrawaddy Online) is a rare good thing coming out of the 88 uprising, I would like to see it go beyond the financier's agenda or perhaps something like the PBS standard. I am sure you have visited this website www.pbs.org.
Cheers!
