WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama on Tuesday called on the Burmese military government to release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi unconditionally.

“It is time for the Burmese government to drop all charges against Aung San Suu Kyi and unconditionally release her and her fellow political prisoners,” Obama said, adding that by her actions, “Aung San Suu Kyi has represented profound patriotism, sacrifice and the vision of a democratic and prosperous Burma.”

“Such an action would be an affirmative and significant step on Burma’s part to begin to restore its standing in the eyes of the United States and the world community and to move toward a better future for its people,” Obama said in a statement issued by the White House.

“I call on the Burmese government to release National League for Democracy secretary general and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi from detention immediately and unconditionally,” he said.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has issued opinions this week affirming that the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, dating back to 2003, is arbitrary, unjustified and in contravention of Burma’s own law. The UN Security Council reaffirmed on May 22 its concern about Suu Kyi in a statement and called for the release of all political prisoners, Obama noted.

Obama said Suu Kyi’s continued detention, isolation and show trial based on spurious charges cast serious doubt on the Burmese regime’s willingness to be a responsible member of the international community.

“This is an important opportunity for the government in Burma to demonstrate that it respects its own laws and its own people, is ready to work with the National League for Democracy and other ethnic and opposition groups, and is prepared to move toward reconciliation,” he said.

Meanwhile, The Elders—a group of eminent global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela —on Tuesday repeated its call for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi as her latest six-year period of house arrest is due to expire on May 27.

The chair of The Elders, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, said: “Despite the latest efforts to exclude and silence our sister Aung San Suu Kyi, she remains a symbol of hope for her nation and the world.”

Former US President Jimmy Carter said Aung San Suu Kyi is a hero for those who believe in human rights and democracy. “Her ongoing detention is a further reflection on the integrity of the government,” he said.

The Elders are currently meeting in Morocco and have kept an empty chair for Aung San Suu Kyi, as they always do. Their discussions covered a range of global issues, including events in Burma. They also urged Asean countries in particular to make it clear to Myanmar’s leaders that their current actions are jeopardizing the legitimacy of elections due in 2010 and the results will not be recognized unless minimum conditions are met.

The conditions are release of all political prisoners, an inclusive national process to review the 2008 constitution and participation by the NLD and other parties in the 2010 election. International observers must also be allowed to supervise the 2010 poll, they said.

Mr.Tom Tun,

Sir, I know what is Democracy. Why Editor edited my letter I don't know. If they print my whole letter you are not going to write against me. This was a letter from Than Shwe to Obama not from me. Then you can guess what he wrote to Obama.

I think most of the Burmese don't understand what is democracy mean. If you think you know, can you write an Article about the Democracy sir?

We really appreciate it. Also I want to know why Burmese people want democracy and what kind of democracy we need in Burma?

One more thing, can you write to Than Shwe
what will be good for general public in Burma? I think you are smart person in Burmese people. Best of luck.

Real Burmese people expectations without Okkar who is just paying Lip service.

US will do something for black gold or making money, point of view so-called American interest. Plz look past 50 yrs history of Middle East affairs.

Burma is 0.00000001% of American interest which is energy/oil. Same issue for ASEAN, China, India, Russia, EU/ UN, etc…

Only way out:
In 10,000 towns all over the Burma, Twenty million Burmese (people power) protest with lead/ help from 100,000 Army Officers & their guns & fighting skills, we can change for better Burma. (better than S'pore in 2040).

Otherwise, we can talk until we go to next life because Than Shwe & well trained top 100 Gens have upper position to control Burma for next 1000 yrs & making millions of money, own expensive homes, lands, cars & gold. (whether we like it or NOT)

Okkar the top 100 generals own homes, land & cars with values ten million times higher than their salary.
Let him write whatever he wishes without looking at ordinary Burmese people. Life is in the drain compare with 20 yrs ago.
Okkar, Than Shwe and the top 100 generals are worried that if Daw Suu is free or leads the Burmese government, they can’t make millions of any more.

Missing basics:
Nobody reports to Than Shwe that ordinary Burmese people daily life is in the dark without electricity ( running water ) at home for more than 50% of hrs, ( every single day ) 365 days for past 20 yrs.
Before 1988, we have electricity 99% of 365 days for 50 yrs.
If they ( Okkar ) report, their families will be without food & money.
Okkar, do you dare to report what real Burmese people daily life compare to 20 yrs ago?
( regarding standard of living, education system, healthcare system, public transportation system, many more systems like in Thai, Malaysia & S’pore, etc…)

Hay Maung Thein,
There is no Burmese way of Democracy. Answer this question. If a political system is any less than democracy, can that system be call democracy? Maybe uneducated stupid Than Shwe and his group will accept it but the whole world is laughing at you guys' monkey tricks. If you want to discuss a political system, make sure you know the system deeply first. Just picking out the word democracy from the thickest dictionary and reading the meaning doesn't make you to know what democracy is. If you want to discuss more about this subject, by all means. I can even teach you if you want. That includes Okka, too. Obama is not too young for knowledge. He is smarter than you guys and three generations of your great grandfathers combined together. Look at the situation of Burma done by previous generation, are you saying they are smart? If Than Shwe knows too well how to fix it, why is he is so scared and in hiding? Smarten up, you morons!

Burma's decades old problem is not resolvable through the means of statements, slogans, diplomacies, sanctions, etc. Although those measures have been in place against the military junta for about twenty years, it is obvious that ordinary people get more and more misery, whereas the junta people continuously acquire lavishly luxuries. Are we still waiting for such fanciful voices or are we ready to switch to other effective and different strategies in order to save our land and our people from the hands of deplorable disciples of the devil Than Shwe?

Thank you Mr Obama. You're the man. Let China takes care of North Korea's Nukes. They are like a father and a son. You don't need to worry about North Korea. You need to take care of the evils from Burma first.

Okkar,

For fairness sake, can't you stand up and be counted for once. A true injustice is being done to a fellow Burmese?
If there was ever a time for the US to get involved, be it a stick or carrot approach, it should be now and large enough to make an effect on SPDC.

To Okkar,

Tell me what is the definition of justice? How many kinds of justice are there? Who is the first person ever discuss about justice and left it in writing? You call Daw Suu's trial a criminal trial? Let's show us how much you know about justice. Open your eyes and look around.

President Obama,

I respect your opinion. You are too young to understand our politics. This is Burmese way to Democracy. I know you are too busy with N.Korea, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq and Iran. We are doing our best for Democracy in Burma. Please leave us alone, sir.

Okkar...Do you get paid by the number of words you post by the military junta?

You sure sound like a propaganda recording that is broken. Postings with just a hint (not asking for much) that a rational thought process was used would be easier on the eyes and intelligence of the readers of this site.

Obama should focus on the more important issue threatening the regional security - North Korea's Nukes!

He shouldn't waste his time on some criminal trial that is being taking place in a country he has never been or the people he has never met.

This is a joke. We are not fools, sir. Why is the Obama administration
not doing anything for democracy in Burma? Why don't they want to confront China? If he is talking truth, he needs to talk to China first. Can the US can stop business with China because of Burma? Tell him to do this first for us. Thank you, Mr Obama.

Daw Aung San Su Kyi is charismatic and influential amongst the democratic countries, which in fact causes a real headache for the military government. Mr Obama is known as a pragmatic leader and it will be very interesting to see how he would handle the Burma situation rather than the sanctions, which, they are aware of, were not effective. It is nice to see his initiative and I hope he can find how to engage in a diplomatic way to sort out the Burma crisis.
