Lt-Gen Myint Swe is being widely tipped to succeed Snr-Gen Than Shwe as the Burmese army's next commander in chief, according to several dissidents in exile and Burma observers.

Rumors have circulated that Myint Swe is junta strongman Than Shwe’s favored choice to take over from him. Myint Swe was recently promoted to quartermaster general of the Tatmadaw, Burma’s armed forces, and is also commander of the Bureau of Special Operations 5.

According to analysts, Myint Swe’s appointment indicates that the junta chief intends to pave the way for him to assume a top-ranking position in the military's hierarchy. Traditionally, a quartermaster in the Tatmadaw is among the names in the hat who could feasibly be promoted to commander in chief of Burma’s armed forces.

Myint Swe reportedly caught Than Shwe’s eye in 2002 when he was involved in the arrests of late dictator Gen Ne Win’s family after an alleged coup conspiracy was uncovered. Then, in October 2004, Myint Swe proved his loyalty to Than Shwe by heading the purge against former military intelligence chief Prime Minister Gen Khin Nyunt.

Myint Swe became a second lieutenant officer after he graduated from the 15th intake of the Defence Services Academy in 1971. He was promoted to commanding officer of Infantry Battalion 404 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming commanding officer of Light Infantry Division 11 overseeing security in Rangoon. He then served as commander of Southwest Military Region in Bassein, Irrawaddy Division, before moving to the War Office in the late 1990s where he worked directly under Than Shwe and Vice Snr-Gen Maung Aye, reputedly becoming their close confidante.

In 2001, Myint Swe made brigadier-general as the commander of the Southeast Region when he succeeded Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Sit Maung who had died in a helicopter crash. As a divisional commander and a favorite of Burma’s “first lady,” Than Shwe’s wife Kyaing Kyaing, Myint Swe took over Rangoon Command and was promoted to major-general.

As a commander in Rangoon and chief of Military Affairs Security, he failed to catch the culprits when the former capital was rocked by a series of bomb blasts in 2005, which killed 21 people and injured dozens more. Nonetheless, his reputation and loyalty within the military elite went unquestioned.

As chief of both the Bureau of Special Operations 5 and Military Affairs Security, Myint Swe undoubtedly played a ruthless role in the crackdown and handling of monk-led demonstrations in September 2007.

It's interesting that he happens to be ethnic Mon. I believe Than Shwe's wife is, as well. Ironically, that would make him Burma's first minority head of government and head of state (unless you count Sao Shwe Thaike back in the '50s).

Yes, the old maxim "no honour among thieves" rules out attributing qualities, such as loyalty to these thugs, no matter the manner, rationale of their assention in this treacherous chain of command. We can only hope that their delusion causes such dissent among themselves that sanity eventually prevails and there is a coup among the generals.

It is interesting to note, that the soldiers who inevitably have no choice but to serve these sub-species have wives and children, as do those they are forced to repress. "Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive," is another apt proverb to describe the insatiable appetite of the miliary to cover their crimes. Make no mistake—these cowards are afraid, and, just like their innocent victims who never know when they will be taken in the night and tortured or killed, these generals should keep looking over their shoulders. Enjoy it while you can boys, because "the times they are a'changin'." Make peace with yourselves because nothing will save you.

Yes, Top-Dog or Under-Dog whoever it is, junta generals are living in a world of betrayals and back-stabbings or dog-eat-dog culture. A noted quote of the day refelecting this culture by Kyaing Kyaing (Gen Than Shwe's wife) as:-
"The day you give up the post of 'chief-of-staff', will be the day you will be eaten up just like your own boss Gen Ne Win."

I certainly doubt that Myint Swe will replace Than Shwe to head the infamous junta.

What about Shwe Mann?

Of course Tin Aung Myint Oo's resignation narrows down the list.

However, Than Shwe cannot pick Myint Swe as his successor as it would certainly have a disastrous impact on the monk murderer if he does.

And there is Maung Aye waiting in the wings for his rightful place also.

Holding the 2010 elections is also in doubt.
With the UWSA and other ethnic Chinese based insurgents at large refusing to tow his line, Than Shwe needs to change his election date as well.

Than Shwe's hesitation to take on the UWSA and other insurgents definitely shows China's hand in the 'internal affairs of Burma'.

The best bet for Than Shwe today is to hold the fort as it is today as per China's advice.

War with the UWSA and ethnic Chinese insurgents will certainly spell doom for Than Shwe and his thugs, believe me.

Of course US investments will certainly add millions to Than Shwe's wallet and the US' as well.

If nothing else you will have seen the significance of sanctions on the next generation the SPDC. They have absolute no contact with the West militarily or otherwise except through Russia.

The Russian have an institution that teach the Russian languages for all chosen cadetess who are willing to learn.

There has been two decades of indoctrination in Russian militarily ways all because of the West's policy.

Myint Swe has his loyalty to Than Shwe. When Than Shwe goes to hell, Myint Swe will follow the same path. The only way for him to avoid his fate is for him to take off his (murderous) uniform, get into Monk hood and practice Vipassana meditation and donate his life to Buddhim. That is the way Myint Swe can clean his bad Karma. He must act now before it is too late.

Myint Swe sounds like another inbred clone. Nothing will ever change without widespread revolution.
