Suu Kyi, Nyan Win Discuss NLD Policy
Detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with her colleague Nyan Win, the spokesman of the National League for Democracy (NLD), on Wednesday morning. Speaking to The Irrawaddy prior to entering Suu Kyi’s compound, Nyan Win said he was going to discuss their party’s political structure and its direction. Suu Kyi has met with Nyan Win, who is also one of her lawyers, seven times since after she was put under house arrest in August. The two have met twice this month. Nyan Win met Suu Kyi on Nov. 9 and afterward said that Suu Kyi assigned him “a duty,” though he declined to elaborate. During their meeting on Nov. 9, Suu Kyi told Nyan Win that she was satisfied with her meeting with the US delegation led by Kurt Campbell last week and she thanked the Burmese military government for allowing the meeting to take place. Suu Kyi has been detained for more than 14 of the past 20 years. Her latest detention began in May 2003 after the convoy of vehicles in which she was traveling was attacked by junta loyalists during a canvassing trip in Depayin. Charged with violating the terms of her house arrest in May a few weeks before the end of her detention, Suu Kyi was sentenced to a further 18 months house arrest in August.
