Burmese and Bangladeshi warships faced off across the Bay of Bengal on Monday as both nations built up naval and military forces along the border, according to a report in the Dhaka-based The Daily Star on Monday.

Quoting sources within the Bangladeshi armed forces, The Daily Star reported that Burma had on Sunday brought in heavy tanks, artillery guns, 12 warships and a frigate “as part of its preparation for a large-scale conflict with Bangladesh.”

The Bangladeshi daily said that according to a Bangladeshi naval official, Dhaka had reinforced its maritime border “in a bid to repulse a Myanmarese incursion by preparing 30 warships in Chittagong and Khulna.”

Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni reportedly rejected reports about the heavy military build-up on the border at a press conference on Sunday, saying it is a routine movement of security personnel.

However, the Bangladeshi daily cited several sources within the country’s defense services who suggested the Burmese regime was provoking a conflict.

The Irrawaddy was unable to independently confirm the reports with the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

Meanwhile, news of the standoff has to date gone unreported in Burma’s state-run press.

Tensions between Burma and Bangladesh mounted last week after Burmese armed forces began erecting barbed wire fencing along its Bangladeshi border.

According to The Daily Star, the Burmese government had deployed nine light infantry battalions to the border region. However, Khaing Mrat Kyaw, an editor at the Dhaka-based Narinjara news agency, told The Irrawaddy on Monday that only five battalions had been moved into position by Oct 7.

Bangladesh and Burma share a 320-kilometer border, partly demarcated by the Naf River, a regular route for smuggling and illegal crossings.

Tin Soe, an editor for the Kaladan Press Network, based in Bangladesh, said that a border-based military officer told Bangladeshi journalists in Dhaka on Sunday: “We will solve this conflict through diplomatic channels. If we can’t solve it, we have to go to war, because we don’t want to lose an inch of land.”

Tin Soe said that the people living near the border are worried about the potential conflict because they fear the Burmese junta’s troops will bury a lot of landmines along the border.

Dipu Moni said the Burmese government is not violating international law by erecting wire fence along its border with Bangladesh.

However, a Bangladeshi naval officer was quoted by The Daily Star as saying: “The Burmese government has sent in 37/57mm artillery guns that will bring Chittagong under their firing range.”

The naval officer reportedly said that according to Bangladeshi information gathering, the Burmese government is preparing for a short-scale naval conflict. He also noted that the Burmese had positioned three fighter planes at Sittwe airfield, which is only 80 km (50 miles) from Chittagong International Airport.

A Burmese analyst suggested that the Burmese government’s troop reinforcements could be related to an official Bangladeshi request on Oct. 8 to the United Nations to resolve the maritime boundaries dispute in the Bay of Bengal.

Dear Bwanyunt,
I just read what you wrote! Do you think we will keep our hands in our pockets while your army captures our Chittagong. Forget it. History knows that we can love people and love our country. Don't ever think about it, try to be a good neighbor like us and hope it will be good for your country's future!

Our neighbour Burma—such a mad, wild and aggressive nation. The Bangladeshi army is one of the world's strongest armed force. .

I believe war won't happen between these two countries. They need to protect disputed gas field areas before the UN decision.

This is sad ... warring between neighbours. If they talked to each other, this could be solved.

War is never a good thing. Young men die for old men's decisions. And women and children also pay with their lives.

Bangladesh is a civilised country and both peoples share very common values. We all look the same, dress the same, and have a lot of cultural similarities.

The Bengalis have never been known to be aggressors. But rest assured if war does take place then they are not shy of defending themsleves. I mean, look at the deafeat of Pakistan.

And today even India respects their military might. They have received awards from the UN on many occasions for the peacekeeping efforts across the world.

But my opinion would be that diplomatic options should be exhausted first. If this does not work then the Bengalis have every right to take that military junta out. They have the capability and any other country that tries to take action against this defensive maneuvre will also face the consequences.

Whatever may be the reason or cause war/ conflict does not, did not and will not bring any good to the general people.

War is a game of politicians/ rulers. There is no conflict between any general people of the world whatever their identity.

Bangladesh and Myanmar are two neighboring countries. If there is any war between them, then some third party will be benefited who does not want good for us. but if there is a very strong unity between us then it will bring lot of goods and prosperity for us.

So, don't try to light any fire. We are the victims who will be burned by that fire.

However, every country has got the right to defend her territory with utmost capability, will and zeal (highest sacrifice).

We Bangladeshis proved this in 1971, fighting against a regular army (Pakistan Army vs untrained civilians).

Hey freinds, we're Burmese after all.

We're united to fight against any foreign forces, including those from Bangaldesh. Even though I do not support the Junta, I am prepare to go home and recapture Chittagong from Bangaldesh if war broke out. Sorry, this shows how much I love Myanmar even though I do like the Junta. I do not want any Bangladeshis to set foot on Myanmar's soil. This is the way I love my country. We Burmese people should be clear and broadminded when thinking of our future.

Does Than Shwe's army have enough courage to confront Bangladesh's army? Than Shwe's army is trained to kill its own people, not outsiders.

I am watching a large scale of human tragedy. Historically Bangladesh never claimed any part of anything that didn't belong to them. I am saying this standing on an independent state. Bangladesh will fight with its all might for its Territorial integrity wherever it is. It's got a strong Army.

Please check this map for sea which Bangladesh claims as their coastal waters:

I believe some of this area should be in Myanmar's territorial waters .

Now you see so many Burmese support the Bangladesh army. Than Shwe hates the Burmese, whether Burmans or their ethnic brothers. This is why Than Shwe receives such damning responses from Burmese people even when the country is facing war with a neighbor.

I do not want to see conflict between Bangladesh and the Junta Army because we share a common border. The dispute should be resolved at the governmental level through diplomatic channels.

The building of a barb wire fensing is not a big problem, the junta can do so long as it does not violate somebody's land. The Junta just wants to show its military might, it is real problem.

As for the controversial gas field, historically it belonged to Burma, but when Burmese independence was won from Great Britain, the Prime Minster of Burma, then U Nu, did not include Shin Ma Pyu Island in Burma and left it to east Pakistan ( Now Banghladesh). Therefore Bangladesh has the legitimate right to claim it as its territory.

Anyway, let see what junta will do with this confrontation.

I can't wait to see the Burma and Bangladesh war. I can't wait to see Bangladesh's B-52s flying over Naypyidaw. Let's see how strong Than Shwe's army is.

Than Shwe's era is coming to an end. We will see the last day of Than Shwe's empire in a few months.

What else can the military leaders and stealers of Burmese democracy do? Hit them hard in there homes, their families and their cities, as they do yours.

Don't fight them on your land, take the fight to them on the streets of their cities and hurt them.

The Myanmar junta is suicidal. If they attack Bangladesh it will be the end of them. If the Burmese Navy and Air Force launch attacks they should know if they enter Bangladesh it will be a one way ticket to hell.

The Bangladesh military has prepared huge numbers of troops, aircraft, warships. They will hit every Myanmar city day and night in a blitzkrieg.

Is it all worth it? Why does the junta want to shame Burma further? They should admit to their crimes against humanity and surrender otherwise they should prepare themselves to be hanged by a Bangladeshi military court.

Bangladeshis have nothing against the people of Burma, we want to liberate Burma from these terrorists and rapists that rule the beautiful country.

Burmese people will join the Bangladesh army to punish the junta. The Bangladesh government must never give in to the junta`s demands. The Burmese people are standing firmly with the Bangladesh forces. Burmese people stand with the ethnic armies of Shan, Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Mon, Arakan, and Wa/ Kokang. All are an anti-junta coalition. I invite the Bangladesh army to join us.
