Singapore Foreign Minister Challenged Over Burma Remarks

Remarks about Burma by Singapore’s Foreign Minister George Yeo have raised eyebrows in Burmese exile circles.

In an interview with Singapore’s Online Citizen, Yeo made several incorrect statements about Burma, leading to questions about the depth of his knowledge of the country.

In the most blatant of the errors, Yeo said Burma had been ruled by the military since independence. In fact, post-independence Burma enjoyed democratic government until 1962, when Gen Ne Win’s coup introduced military rule.

Yeo was also incorrect in telling the Online Citizen that independence hero Aung San had created the law that a Burmese citizen who married a foreigner could not take political office.

The law could be used to bar his daughter Aung San Suu Kyi from ever becoming Burma’s president.

In fact, Aung San did not introduce the law. According to Burma’s first constitution of 1947, the president of Burma has to be at least second generation Burmese.

“No person shall be eligible for election to the office of President unless he is a citizen of the Union who was, or both of whose parents were, born in any of the territories included within the Union,” according to the 1947 constitution.

And to be a qualified member of parliament, the constitution noted that, “Any person who is under any acknowledgment of allegiance or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or citizen or entitled to the rights and privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power shall be disqualified for being chosen as and for being member of either Chamber.”

An application by Suu Kyi to be accepted as a candidate in the 1990 election was rejected on the grounds she had married a British scholar, Michael Aris.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was accused three things, one of them being that she was not qualified because she married a foreigner,” said Moe Zaw Oo, a leader of the National League for Democracy (Youth) in the 1990s who closely worked with Suu Kyi before she was put under house arrest in 1989.

In the Online Citizen interview, Yeo also said that the problems of Burma must not be oversimplified. They were very complex because of ethnic diversity, he said.

If you truly care, look back at just my last few posts and you will get it. If you don't, try harder.

Plan B,

What is your plan B? To wait for the opportunity in Burma? Do you know why we are not getting democracy? Because of many opportunists like you inside and outside of Burma.

"I am glad that you believe DASSK will come into power."

Of course, I am not hopeless like you. We do believe in DASSK. We will be there soon.

Do your homework. Google.
"I am glad that you believe DASSK will come into power."

There is always that outside chance, but will she make the same mistakes?

The odds are not good.

Singapore may need the cane as a punishment, but Burma doesn't need the cane nor bloody tyrants. Burmese people are intelligent and humble people, all we need is logical freedom and justice. Maybe Singaporian leaders are so afraid that Burma will be free and Singapore will lose the spoils from Burma.

"Either George Yeo is ignorant of the background of a regional country, which reflects incompetence of his civil servant advisers within the Foreign Ministry, or else he is fabricating stories to justify his foreign policy. If the latter, to put it bluntly, he is lying."

Example of extremely bad presumption. Where are your facts?

Just because the idea do not jive with the "I love DASSK so much" groupies does not mean it is irrelevant.

If nothing else you should see it as how much Singapore and SPDC are beholden to each other.

You said "Just to be fair, there are a lot of Singaporeans who are pouring billions of $$ into organizations that benefit the Burmese children at the border and beyond."

Can you prove that? Give me the facts.

I am glad that you believe DASSK will come into power.

"I am glad you folks have finally found out about the the people who run Singapore and are paid millions. I feel sorry for the people of Burma. They deserve better. But don't expect support from Asean and Singapore. They will do nothing. And I hope DASSK will remember this when she comes into power!"

Sure like biting the hand that is feeding you.

Remember Its people like Mr Yeo that is keeping folks in Singapore like you in a perpetual state of false economic security called "jobs."

Worst is this economic security is off the back of the one-sided Burmese trade. Ask yourself why rice is so much cheaper in Singapore? You might just learn something.

Just to be fair, there are a lot of Singaporeans who are pouring billions of $$ into organizations that benefit the Burmese children at the border and beyond.

You have Mr Yeo to thank.

Burma is in evil hands that were never accepted by the people. Leaders from neighboring countries have no knowledge about the real Burma because they read and listen only to the Myanmar regime’s media.

My point is: If the recalled election is held without any (any) tricks, the junta parties (so many) will be lost for sure, although even without DASSK. Please remember, what DASSK wants is ONLY the FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY in Burma, NOT for her presidency. This is how admirable she is. This is why I support her and all similarities all the way!

Right, Aung San Suu Kyi married a non- Burmese citizen. It happened because the regime did not let them live in the country with freedom, etc. Remember, her father was a national hero whom the regime has been trying to remove from the true history. She is still a citizen of Burma and still qualifies for another recall election in 2010 as she was allowed by law back in 1990 election, which the NLD won with more than 80 percent of the vote.

Looks like George Yeo tried to fool people because the interview was done at Macdonald's. But please don't think all Singaporeans are like that.

George Yeo and the PAP government have too much invested in Burma, that's the reason for a cover up on Burma's history, but truth will prevail.

Now George Yeo will be looked at, like an imbecile at conferences and meetings of world leaders.

I just hope he responds with an apology, like a man.

Its not a wonder that the foreign minister of a money-minded country says that. Singapore cares only about money. There is good investment from Singapore to Burma. The Singapore FM doesn't know the core concepts of the Burmese people who value our leader Daw Aung San Su Kyi, who is our only hope. The Singapore FM should learn the history of our great leader.

This is the era where so called representations of governments such as ministers and ambassadors alike publicly utter insenstive, unintelligent and undiplomatic remarks and get away with them. I thought that that shameless, uneducated, ill-brought up Burmese ambassador in China was crude enough to make such remarks. Yeo should apologize if he realizes his mistake and if he doesn't want to stand beside that bleached white and holier than thou ambassador.

It is no wonder that this comes from an adopted country which has no culture of its own, except to know that money is time and time is money and struggles to shape itself.

People from adopted countries do not know culture, civics, history, geography, religion or most of the sciences. They are not cultured people. By knowing 10 percent of science, they think they are great. In fact, they are depending on neighbour countries' resources.

Therefore, they need to be friendly with the junta to survive and to make use of the junta. They are afraid of the release of Daw ASSK, who may not let them use the resources of Myanmar.

Yeo does not know about Burma. He is speaking on behalf of the Myanmar regime and China. Look at his words. They’re all about the junta’s policy. There is an agreement between China and ASEAN, something like a veto.

They are just business people and only care about how to easily keep on sucking the Burma’s blood minerals.

I am not surprised. Singapore is full of Chinese that want to control Burma. Besides Tay Za has bank accounts and a house in Singapore. Than Shwe's children and grandchildren probably go there for shopping. If Yeo complains about Michael Aris, how about all these Burmese women marrying Chinese guys?

Yeo was absolutely correct in stating: “Only the military could hold the country together,” even though he could have started with "Historically" and completed with "civilian government has never been given a fair shake!"

Only after Ne WIn quelled the rebellions by invitation of U NU government that traveling between Yangon and Bago become safe again.

Spilt Milk! Moving on until propelled to become the spokesperson for Democracy cumulating in her winning a majority for NLD in '88, It is not that far fetched for Yeo to say that living almost her entire live in UK DASSK is essentially an alien/a dual citizen(disqualifying attribute).

This DASSK can do nothing wrong and SPDC can do nothing right perceptions promoted repeatedly under false pretexts are how the sanctions imposers justify using her persecution as the key to continue present course of actions that will only benefit SPDC and the Chinese.

Will Moe Zaw Oo care to tell us the other 2 things DASSK is being accused of?
