A joint force of Burmese army troops and soldiers of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) seized the headquarters of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade 7 on Sunday, its most important victory in a weeks-long offensive in the Burmese-Thai border area,

As fighting raged, Karen sources said the Thai authorities are forcibly repatriating refugees who had fled to Thailand.

The fall of the brigade headquarters of the Karen National Union (KNU) military wing was confirmed by Maj Hla Ngwe, joint secretary (1) of the KNU, who said KNLA forces would now resort to “guerrilla tactics.” only one KNLA Brigade 7 base remained intact, he said.

Hla Ngwe said seven soldiers of the attacking force had died when the assault on the Brigade 7 headquarters began on June 19.

KNU sources say the KNLA’s Brigade 7 has also lost three battalion bases—21, 22 and 101. Half of the battalion 202 base has also been taken.

Hla Ngwe said the loss of the KNLA Brigade 7 headquarters could have an effect on the work of Burmese opposition organizations based in the Thai border town of Mae Sot.

About 4,000 Karen refugees have fled to Thailand since the offensive began in the first week of June. Many are being forced by the Thai authorities to return to Burma, according to local sources.

The Karen Women Organization (KWO) issued a statement on Monday saying it was deeply concerned about the repatriation of Karen families from Tha Song Yang in Thailand’s Tak Province, and appealing for international action to help the refugees.

Aid groups, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Thai authorities are now discussing the problem.

KWO Secretary Dah Eh Kler said: “Thai authorities should at least wait and assess the situation. Forcing these people to return during the rainy season and to places where they still have every reason to fear for their lives is inhuman and a violation of their rights.”

The KWO said the repatriated Karen faced human rights abuses and even death.
“Women are vulnerable to rape if they are forced to return,” said the KWO statement, drawing attention to the rape and murder last week of two young Karen women by Burmese soldiers.

The two women, aged 17 and 18, were caught by Burmese army soldiers in Kwee Law Plo village in Pa-an district when their husbands fled into the jungle. The soldiers, from Infantry Battalion 205, raped and then murdered the women, one of whom was pregnant and the other was the mother of a six-months-old baby.

Don't blame our past, present or future Karen leaders. They try their best.

Please calm down a little, my Karen people. Now we try to hit our own knee. It hurts so much. We haven't finished Karen War for freedom yet. Karen never surrender, even if only one person is left out of 15 million Karen People. Think about it, it might be you!

To Okkar: The KNU will never fade. The KNU and Rohingyas will be back soon. Gen. Saw Bo Mya foresaw nothing. That's why the KNU got weaker and the Karens are divided. Bo Mya was not a good leader. Karens will fight until Burma is free and Than Shwe gets killed. This is the ultimate goal for Karens. The Karens will never give up and never surrender.

It is true that KNLA Brigade (7) has lost some of its main bases but it doesn't mean it has lost the war. As mentioned, the Karen guerilla forces are still there. There might be several reasons why the Karen army let the DKBA take control of the bases pretty easily. This is a political strategy the KNU leaders have operated and I can't wait to see the outcome of it in the next few months.

I'm so sad after reading this piece of news, and I'm wondering what will happen in the future of the Karen people. Will the Karen people look like the people of Israel, who struggled for more than 800 years? Are the Karen people on the way? Well, we never know, but I believe someday there will be a big change in Burma for the Karen and all other ethnic groups. Don't forget to put Burma in your prayers. Thank you.

p.s
May God bless all the Karen people around the world.

Dont forget these people aren't helpless civilians. They are the families of the insurgents. They chose to stay at those camps knowing that they would be attacked one day. Would The Irrawaddy print the same story if the situation was the other way around?

Just like any other war, there are collateral damages everywhere. Myanmar is no exception. The KNU had the chance to exchange their arms for peace like any other ethnic minorities, they refused to do so because they believed that they would get help from the West. Now the KNU is realising the empty promises of the West and regretting that they did not choose to walk down the path to peace. Gen Saw Bo Mya foresaw the demise of the KNU long ago, that's why he initiated the peace talks only to see them failed because of Mhan Sha's sabotage. The KNU is nothing without Gen Bo Mya. The Karen people started this insurgency and the Karen people have ended this insurgency. The KNU will fade into the pages of history, Burma will prosper. The Karen will be free!

War is war, kill or die!
I felt great sympathy for those who are victims of the fighting between these two groups. What is the current position of the KNU? Political organization or armed group? Or both? If political group, lay down your arms and fight like a politician. If an armed group, fight and kill. Your enemy kills your people, why can't you kill your enemy? As those Karen who made a ceasefire agreement with the SPDC but not with the KNU point your gun back and attack the KNU (they are not your brother Karen anymore). The KNU should not hesitate and wait, it must eliminate the DKBA, KNUPC, or those who personally (like general Bo Mya's son who recently made an alliance with Sthe PDC) made alliance with SPDC. They kill you. I am sorry for those Karen and KNU who live in Mae Sot.
More assassinations will come, just wait and see.

How sad that this is still going on when so many know what it is that's going to happen to these poor people if they are forced to return to Burma.

Finally we have to admit that we are the weaker side. Let's encourage our Karen fighters to apply for resettlement or move to the cities and play politics like "others" who are there and only talking politics.
