The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA), a ceasefire group, has begun forcibly recruiting people to serve as border guards in compliance with orders from Burma’s ruling junta, according to Karen sources.

A Karen source close to the DKBA said that the ceasefire group recently started a three-month recruitment drive in villages in its territory. New recruits will then receive training from the Burmese army, said the source.

Saw Steve, a head of the Committee for Internally Displaced Karen People, a Karen relief group, said the DKBA started rounding up villagers to serve as border guards in areas under its control, including Thaton and Pa-an districts, last month.

Some villagers were threatened with arrest by DKBA soldiers if they refused to join the new border security force, he said.

In January, the DKBA was told by the Burmese regime in Naypyidaw to provide border guards under the terms of Burma’s new constitution.

According to Karen sources in the Thai border town of Mae Sot, opposite Myawaddy in Burma’s Karen State, some people in villages under DKBA control have begun fleeing to Thailand to escape forced recruitment.

“Some villagers don’t want to serve as soldiers, so they are running to Thailand,” said the source close to the DKBA.

The DKBA, which signed a ceasefire agreement with the Burmese military regime after splitting from the Karen National Union in 1995, is one of many groups that are facing increasing pressure from the Burmese army to transform themselves into border security forces.

Under the new scheme, the border guards would be commanded by officers of the Burmese army. The move is seen as a way to effectively disarm the ceasefire groups.

So far, however, few of the key ceasefire groups have shown any interest in falling in line with the junta’s plan.

Last month, two major ceasefire groups—the New Mon State Party and the United Wa State Army—reportedly rejected instructions from the junta to transform their soldiers into border guards under the joint-command of the Burmese army.

Another strong ethnic ceasefire group, the Kachin Independence Organization, has not yet made a decision regarding the Burmese regime’s plan. The organization said that it would carefully consider the junta’s proposal.

Like the SPDC generals, the DKBA leaders are poorly educated in the way of politics and even about the country's history. It is a case of birds of the same feathers flocking together that the DKBA has become a willing partner of the dictatorship.

However, the SPDC plan to make it a border guard force under its total control should put some sense into the heads of DKBA troops, especially at the lower levels. Gen Khin Nyunt’s promise to make them the government of Karen State has long evaporated. I predict that many will soon return to fight together with the KNLA for the liberation of 8-10 million Karen people in the Irrawaddy delta, Bago Division, Yangon Division, Mon State and Taninthayi Division.

Whatever you guys say it is OK for the DKBA, because none of them read English or use the Internet. They don't know about the world. If the SPDC generals are not aware of the world, then don't even think about the DKBA; they are fish paste. I have some close friends in the DKBA and even relatives, but you know, they are all crazy. Without the SPDC they can not breath. My SPDC friend told me that the Karen will be lost in the world history is the only way through this DKBA.

Please DKBA, you were given birth with Karen mother. So, please do not torture your people (Karen). If you only support the enemy, the SPDC, one day your generation will be lost and no more in this world.

Remember your mother tongue. Look after, take care of, your people. If you love your parents, your parents love you.

The enemy is not as good as your parents. They will love you only when they use you. When they do not use you, they will kick you out. If you do not believe or trust me, look at it until the end.

Please think carefully. You are a Karen organization. You are Karen also. Do not forget Saw Ba U Gyi's four principles.

In my eyes the DKBA is corrupt and maybe dealing with the SPDC and against their own people. For years, they make a peace deal with the KNU/KNLA. Now they fight against their friends from before. Same as the KNU/KNLA-PC. I stay behind the KNU/KNLA from Nerdah Mya, son of the late Gen Saw Bo Mya and from Saw Ba Thin Sein, the former Chairman of the KNU and from the Ethnic National Council. Saw Bo Mya and Saw Ba Thin Sein were among the best for the Karen people and Saw Ba Thin Sein was the leader of the ENC also. I hope, some time a new man like Ba Thin Sein will come.

It is sad that the DKBA will become border guards. They will have no power anymore. They are controlled by the SPDC. One day, the SPDC will break them all and take their property. There will be no more Karen in the DKBA in ten more years. We could see an example of KRC(Karen Revoluntionary Council) in 1963. Now we do not see any Karen in KRC and no organisation. No Karen State. Where is KRC now? Like this, the DKBA will become like this.
If you can not help your people by living separately with your enemy, you can never help your people by living and working with you enemy.
If you love money, your people will disappear soon. If you love your people and work in peace, one day you will get your country and you will be known in the world.
So, please think carefully DKBA

I am very saddened to see that leadership of DKBA are becoming puppets of SPDC. If the news about them is true, our Karen brethren are losing some of their kin to SPDC.

I pray that leadership of DKBA will see the light and realize the suffering of their own people at the hands of Burmese Junta and that they share some responsibilities afflicting suffering of their own Karen people.

The DKBA came about after the Buddhist Karen soldiers clashed with KNU Christian leadership. It was to the benefit of the Bamar army.

And, if they clash with the Buddhist Bamar it will be to the benefit KNU. The benefit will go back and forth and the suffering of Karen people will increase. And, peace and prosperity will be far from the Karen people and the land.

For the Karen, they do not need to guard the border as the Thais are friendly with them and helping them. But, they have to guard their own fence if they can not trust each other.

They need only a police force to take care of themselves. There is too much gambling, especially at the Buddhist festivals all over Karen state. Drugs come along. All these against Lord Buddha's teachings.

If DKBA is thinking of establishing a peaceful Karen state they should think of Buddha's teachings.

The Karen(KNU, DKBA) still kill each other and they are killer Karen. Kawthoolei can never be built by a killer.

DKBA, you betray your own Karen Buddhist people for your leader's interests. Hope Buddha blesses you all.

Make sure yourself and think carefully. This is not a children's playing game. I want all ethnic armed groups to refuse the Burmese military.

DKBA is too crazy. They made decision in a short time.

From a proud freedom fighter to a fence guard. Does DKBA know how defaming is it?

DKBA has no brain. The most stupid group in Burma. They eat only fishpaste. They have never learn the lessons. They will get regret later. They should not call themselves Karen.

I know the DKBA are Karen people and they eat rice and wear clothes and I hope they still have the Karen blood in them and I believe they are not that crazy.

This border guard [duty] must not be to protect the SPDC but the Karen people and its teritory. One day the SPDC will realize that the DKBA is not for them but for Karen people.

Karen National Union is for all Karen people and army. KNLA, DKBK and whatever the Karen Army.

The K.N.U (Karen Now Nnited) together we will fight against the SPDC till we have our own Freedom, Rights, dignity and not only the Karen State but Karen country.
