NLD spokesman Nyan Win speaks to reporters at a press conference in Rangoon on Friday. (PHOTO: Reuters)
Burma’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), announced on Friday that its MPs are “highly unlikely” to participate in the swearing-in ceremony at Parliament on April 23 as it has received no confirmation that the government will change the wording of the oath its representatives have to pledge by.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s Rangoon headquarters, spokesman Nyan Win said, “It is not sure yet whether the NLD’s elected MPs will attend the April 23 parliamentary meeting.”
The NLD has proposed a rewording of the oath—which all new parliamentarians must swear to—from “abide by and protect the Constitution” to read “abide by and respect the Constitution.”
Nyan Win said that he had met with members of the Constitutional Court on Thursday and that “they did not say that they will not change” the wording of the oath.
Speaking to The Irrawaddy on Friday ahead of his press conference, Nyan Win said, “The Constitutional Court explained the legal perspective in terms of changing words in the oath.”
Soon after, when he addressed the issue with reporters, he said that he did not argue or discuss the issue, but “just listened to what the Constitutional Court had to say.”
The NLD spokesman said the party is now planning to submit letters regarding its position on the oath to the president’s office, to both the Upper and Lower Houses, and to the Constitutional Court.
“We will try to resolve the issue,” he said. “We are trying to avoid a political deadlock.”
Meanwhile, the NLD is continuing with a four-day training program in Rangoon for its 43 MP-elects who must wait to see if the oath issue is resolved before they travel to Naypyidaw for Monday’s ceremony.
As for the the wording ” protect ” and ” respect ” issue can resolve later, NLD parliamentarian members should attend the both houses ( both parliament ). From the political point of view, to-day you can say you protect the constitution, tomorrow you can say you cant protect the constitution due to many reasons you can give. General New Win took oath, afterward he overthrow the elected government. From the point of law it may require to change the wording, but from the political and present situation it should not be an issue at all.
The world is watching. Do not fear. The world is watching Burma.
As is the case, NLD is principably correct in upholding its Party’s principal Agenda and that is to seek the Amendment of the 2008 Constitution and establishing the Rule of Law in the country.
NLD is principably correct in refusing to take the oath when there is no integrity in the Constitution which is not written by the people for the people.
The Constitution is already flawed and cannot be upheld until it is amended by the people for the people.
Constitution is ‘the’ issue of ‘national referendum. The by-elections were held to replace those who vacated. Get it right!
NLD is embolden abd getting cocky.
Why?
1) Because it has no teeth, not having enough number to win any debate. So
2) Gambit to ride roughshod over the parliament, in which case NLD is behaving like dictators. Stand to reason? Yes or no.
OR
To stay in the limelight now that the woman’s picture is seen less and less?
OR feeling of being duped by the West: on the surface supporting NLD all the way with the motive to legitimize the by-elections and thus the Constitution consequently – and to let the Western companies invest in Burma. VERY GOOD.
What kind of people are these newly elected 43 NLD MPs? Ignoramuses. In the West, people like them will be only kitchen porters and street cleaners.
Democracy is a sham; stepping stone for ignoramus to power, and eventually to riches through corruption. Just you wait. all politicians stink – everywhere, some more than others.
Why do they enter politics instead of gaining knowledge, know how and skills – much needed to rebuild Burma? They do because of their lust for power, riches, fame and glory. Admit it. They just use the use the ideology of democracy to suit their purpose.
Who actually started the political change? The students!
What about honouring them?
Dear students, you had mistakenly supported NLD, the opportunists. Where are you now? Do you know who really released you from the prison?
Now, you learn politics seriously and form a political party to challenge NLD. We will support you all the way provided you do not suck up to Panglong. Remember there were no internal boundaries in the monarchical era. Fact! Burma was a unitary kingdom. The term ‘Burma Proper’ was coined by the colonist English historians. Reject their conspiracy!
Exercise freedom of speech and condemn NLD for fradulent use of our BELOVED BOGYOKE AUNG-SAN, who would have definitely disowned the traitor daughter.
Never doubt our moral courage – to speack the truth! It is only the beginning. All our allegations are backed by solid facts.
My god, you’re tiresome.
Why? Truth hurts?
Truth doesn’t hurt. But lies are tiresome. Get it?
The right perspective is that the 2008 Constitution was formulated and written by the junta who had failed to recognise the 1990 Election results and had our Lady imprisoned in her house instead.
The whole Constitution remains flawed even after the orchestrated lop-sided election before the by-election.
Hypocrites like these are bone heads and lie to the teeth with lots of empty talks and empty moral values.
The universal truth is that GOOD will always prevail over the bad as history always confirms.
The rampant corruption of the gang of 6 ministries is one such bad example.
What is wrong with those people!!
Even, the US Constitution requires that senators take an oath or affirmation to support the Constitution. Congress has prescribed the following oath for new senators:
“I, ___ ___, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
This threat by the NLD doesn’t surprise me. What the NLD needs to realize is we’re they to fail to turn up to the parliament they are failing to represent the people. Thein Sein needs to announce on Monday new bi elections in any area where an MP fails to turn up for the swearing in ceremony.
The NLD really needs to move beyond this passive aggressive behavior which Makes them look like an Autistic Child who refuses to play with other children unless she can choose the game and is always allowed to win.
This egocentricity is only going to leave the NLD isolated at home when all the other children are invited to parries and sleepovers.
“Thein Sein needs to announce on Monday new bi elections in any area where an MP fails to turn up for the swearing in ceremony.” GOOD, hear, hear!
Let us not have any illusions. They have no intention of representing their respective constituencies. They just use them to fulfil their lust for power.
As simple as that.
Parliament must not give in to this childish demand of a handful fo MPs. Is this the beginnig of the end of NLD? Let’s hope so.
Forget by-elections. Thein Sein should announce a national election. That way the people of Burma won’t have to wait until 2015 to throw out the USDP and make the NLD the ruling party.
Sorry, MP, but if you had the slightest idea what is actually happening in the country you abandoned oh so many years ago, you would probably realize that the generals have finally come to their senses and realized that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is their ticket to safety. I am sure she will be magnanimous when the time comes for sentencing.
Perhaps if you behave yourself, she’ll let you pay a visit someday. Don’t expect a big welcome, though. After all, you’re just another know-nothing nobody who probably washes dishes for a living.
Lieber Herr Messerschmitt,
“Forget by-elections. Thein Sein should announce a national election.”, you must be highly commended for your dictatorial approach. National interest is far more important than democracy of ignoramuses. Genuine democracy has to evolve, without blackmail or opportunism.
We, Myanmar patriots, never abandoned our beloved Myanmar. We are in hundreds of thousands if not in millions. We had to leave at different times since 1962.
If you think Mrs. Michael Aris is the ticket to the generals’ safety, you better see a shrink.
You seem to know so much but understand nothing. For your info Burmese refused to fight the Germans in WW1 for the benefit of the coloniser. Burmese maintained Germany never harmed us; why fight on the side of the English who colonised us and left behind a huge mess.
You don’t know anything about Burmese history and how deep the feelings are. We washing dishes, you really should be in a mental hospital.
Traitor SuuKyi will hang herself. Just give her enough rope.
We don’t kowtow to BBC or VOA. Media elect governments; you should know that. Burmese with slave mentality, in awe to English, American, Australian and Canadian media carpet bombing in support of puppet SuuKyi follow NLD, a bunch of opportunistic ignoramuses. FACT!
Suspending the sanctions will not make much difference to the lives of Myanmars. They have to. Otherwise, they would be letting traitor SuuKyi down. Get it? Then she will realise that her powers are only illusions and delusions. Understand?
She did sweet **** all till she was 43. And then jumped on the democracy ‘doaye’ bandwagon, climbed over the thousands of dead bodies of courageous students.
Herr Messerschmitt, kindly leave Burmese/Myanmar affairs to Burmese/Myanmars, whoever you are, a real or fake German.
Japan is Burma’s real friend. And Germany.
It is astounding how NLD is using their immense popular power to the benefit of the people.
People in Lauza are being shelled with cannons as these words are written. Many will die, be maimed and tortured and raped. The investment law will practically gift wrap the whole country for true exploitation by any one.
No debate, not a word on those.
NLD will win this fight whatever it is for. As per current military policy. But what they win and whatever they are fighting are so lost on the daily struggling people like weather forecast on Mars.
” We will not join the (fake) parliament unless all the killings are stopped immediately.” Please NLD! Please, Please, Please.. People are dying.
Killing in Laiza is real. For NLD it does not mean anything. In fact planet NLD looks fun. What with movie on the way and all singing and dancing and celebrations. People in the North are not invited.
The salivating international community looks on!
Comperatively, Nero looks like Mother Teresa.
I think it is not a good time to raise this issue up to the point of deadlock. Let NLD members get into Hlutaw first and this issue can be resolved there. It is too early to make such a hard stance when the country is opening up and making concessions to NLD. The party should be more tolerant to the situation and should patiently and slowly get their three objectives. Within the government itself, there may be differences in opinions and NLD should woo the Hlutaw members to get what it wants. This should be just a hiccup should not escalate to unreconcilable matter. Otherwise, the country would drain back to what it was before. We had experiences of what happened after we gained Independence from British colony and after 1990 election. Too many groups want too many things. That is the problem. It is best not to look at short term but to look at long term for the sake of the country. Every myanmar wants to be proud of their country and we can become a proud citizen when we settle the things slowly and steadily.
Give them an inch, they will take a yard. Now you see the true character of NLD. They are not for the people but for themselves.
Here is a Burmese folk tale.
An ogress was trying to pull away a baby form its mother. The mother and the ogress were both claiming the baby. Appeared the wise man, who said:” Whoever pulls hardest will be the mother and keep the baby”. Naturally the ogress pulled very hard but the real mother let it go fearing the baby would die if she too pulled.
The wise man determined the real mother was the one who let go.
There you are. NLD is the orgress. Burmese people are the baby.
By the way did anyone notice the hands of SuuKyi?
Over to Herr Messerschmitt
I don’t see you letting go, Don Quixote.
We will never let ‘the truth’ go. We will never let anyone pull wool over Burmese/Myanmar eyes even if Don Quixote falls off the horse.
Never try to impress us with your knowledge of the West, that is not at all relevant to our situation. Be realistic and try to understand the role of Magna Carta of 1215 and the role played by Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, military parliamentary dictator, who acutally ushered in democracy in England – over religious issues.
Be humble and stop showing off. Deal with substantive issues: welfare of all Burmese people and restoration of unity of all Myanmars.
Don’t forget how this Constitution was drafted and approved. NLD said it clearly to amend the Constitution during the by-election campaign and it is doing it. That’s the KEY integrity. Remember… You should hammer your iron when it is glowing hot.
Lack of political finesse, nld should go in first, then amend the C, amending IS “protecting” or “respecting” the C after all, no point splitting hairs over the wording, counter productive, untimely.
INTEGRITY FIRST, SECOND and THIRD lest NLD forgets!
Saying one thing and doing another like Than Shwe/Thein Sein does all these past decades has MAKES MATTER WORSE on the short and long terms as evidenced.
NLD HAS VOWED to AMEND or possibly ABOLISH Than Shwe drawn constitution remember?
Hence saying to DEFEND and then AMENDING/DESTROYING the constitution is SIMPLY LYING in the first place.
HOLD the FORT!
STICK TO YOUR GUNS NLD and MAKE YOUR DAY.
LEAVE THE REST to HISTORY I say.
I am a football fan and today’s Myanmar Parliamentary League results are as follows:
Myanmar Government scored 1 goal
National League fro Democracy 0 goal
The winner is Myanmar Government.
Now that the military-back President is not amending the “oath” for swearing into Parliament, the President is forcing the NLD Elected MPs not to take their oaths.
The NLD is selflessly working for the people of whole Burma and therefore is principally correct for them not to take the oath to protect the military. The NLD must instead uphold the integrity of the Party’s Agenda to protect the interests of the people of Burma and that is not to inherently protect the military as casted in their grossly flawed Constitution.
All foreign sanctions must stay in place until the NLD Elected-MPSs are correctly and rightfully sworn under a new oath that calls for fairness in all aspects.
Now that the military-backed President is not amending the oath for swearing in Parliament, he is forcing our Lady and the NLD Elected Members of Parliament not to take the oath which is drafted by the military to protect the Constitution in order to protect the military.
The NLD should uphold its principal by not taking the oath less it is hookwinked into protecting the military by accepting to protect the 2008 Constitution which is not drafted by the people for the people.
The NLD is principally correct.
All international economic sanctions must remain in place until the oath has been amended and be read in all fairness to the people of Burma.
The President’s diplomatic visas should be revoked and his mission sent back home until our Lady and the NLD Elected-MPs can rightfully take their places in Parliament.
Someone shoot that idiot “Myanmar Patriots” loud-mouth and the stupid king he worships.
No need to shoot Myanmar Patriots; they were all well hosed down during Thingyan.
Let’s face it the NLD are playing the same game they have been playing for 20 yrs and that is “it’s always my turn”
The king he worships is himself. In other words, he is in love with a figment of his imagination.
It’s sad what happens to a man when he can’t face the fact that there are people in this world (e.g., Aung San Suu Kyi) who are infinitely superior to himself.
Perhaps if he ever met her, he might learn that greatness lies in humility and service to others, not in obnoxious bombast and childish insults to those he considers beneath himself.
