Amnesty Int. Concerned over Kachin Civilians

By On Thursday, January 17, 2013 @ 5:53 am

Amnesty International is concerned over the safety of Kachin civilians affected by the fighting between the Burmese government and Kachin rebels, following a government artillery strike that killed three civilians and injured four others on Monday. “Both the army and [Kachin rebels] must ensure that civilians caught in the conflict area are protected. The three tragic deaths in Laiza show that there are real concerns that civilian lives might be at risk,” Amnesty’s Deputy Asia-Pacific Director Isabelle Arradon said in a statement. “We urge the Burmese authorities to immediately launch an investigation into the attack.” She said the government should also allow UN access to displaced civilians.
