The Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP) says it hopes to merge with the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) ahead of national elections in 2015, according to a report by The Myanmar Times. The SNDP performed well in the 2010 election, whereas the SNLD, which came second in 1990, boycotted the polls two years ago. SNDP Vice Chairman Sai Hsaung said a merger would help the parties compete against the National League for Democracy and the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party. The SNDP will hold its second national convention next month.
About time. The Shan have always been divided simply on account of its own diverse ethnic groups within the state.
There will inevitably be class divisions within every group which will come to the fore once the nationalist cause withers away with the formation of a genuine federal union. Evolution or revolution – the perennial question. A union by coercion or a union of the willing. Leadership crucial as ever across the board, majority as well as minority groups.
