Vijay Nambiar, the United Nations secretary-general’s special adviser on Burma, has concluded a visit to the country that included a trip to Arakan State, scene of months of violence between ethnic Arakanese Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims. He traveled to the state with Minister for Immigration and Population Affairs Khin Yi, whose proposals for the region he called “forward-looking and realistic, while taking into account the dignity and essential interests of the affected communities.” Nambiar began his visit on Dec. 16 at the invitation of the Burmese government.
