Govt Should Support Arakan Aid: UN Official

By On Thursday, December 6, 2012 @ 5:38 am

A UN official called on Burma to better support relief work for victims of inter-communal violence between Buddhist Arakanese villagers and Rohingya Muslims in Arakan State, according to a UN statement. “The trust is not there,” Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos said after touring affected communities. “We need political leaders in Myanmar to support the important humanitarian work,” she said, adding that leaders should “speak out and explain that they have asked us to be here to help.” Since June, violence has displaced 115,000 villagers. The UN has complained of hostility by ethnic Arakanese villagers towards its relief for affected Rohingya.
