ILO Says Burma Acting to Cut Forced Labor

The International Labor Organization (ILO) said on Monday that Burma appears to be getting serious about ending the long-standing practices of forced labor and recruitment of child soldiers. “The feedback from communities nationwide indicates that the actual incidence of the use of forced labor continues to diminish,” the ILO said in a report, noting however that it continues to receive complaints related to both practices. “Despite the introduction of sound policies and the issuance of orders, one can expect that contradictory behavior will continue to exist on the ground,” the report said.
